Flu is still circulating: the public antiviral window for students is extended

A child with influenza-like symptoms should not have to push through the school day. Taiwan CDC says influenza remains epidemic and has extended broader public antiviral eligibility for students and childcare staff.

What has been verified

On 20 October, Taiwan CDC said influenza activity was declining but remained at epidemic levels. It therefore extended broader eligibility for publicly funded antivirals for people with influenza-like symptoms who belong to specified high-transmission groups through 15 November.

The listed groups include students from kindergarten through senior high or vocational school and years 1–3 of five-year junior college, along with kindergarten, childcare-centre and home-based childcare workers. Eligibility does not mean self-directed treatment: a clinician must assess symptoms and decide whether medication is appropriate.

Important boundary: eligible patients do not need a positive rapid flu test before a clinician may prescribe publicly funded antivirals, but treatment remains a clinical decision.

What this does not mean

This article does not treat public eligibility as automatic medication and does not offer an individual diagnosis. Paediatric dosing, indication and timing must be assessed by a clinician.
