What is verified
The Ministry of Health and Welfare's page for Structured Decision Making (SDM) child-protection safety-assessment material showed a page update on 16 October. The listed material itself was updated on 27 March and remains available for download.
Assessment must lead to protection
A structured safety assessment is not merely another form. It gives frontline workers a consistent way to identify urgent danger, record the basis for a judgement, and make a report, placement or family-support referral where necessary. Relevant professionals must report suspected child-protection cases immediately, and no later than 24 hours.
The systems question
What should be tested next is whether the tool is actually used, whether results become a safety plan, and whether cross-professional handovers leave an auditable record. A child needs action that confirms safety, not only a completed field.
Our view: Assessment is not proof that a case is finished; it should be the threshold for protection to begin earlier.
