This is not an attempt to turn tragedy into a story. It is a hope that every stage of the judicial process will recognize the children left behind and the family caring for them.

A family shattered in moments

On September 15, 2023, a double homicide in Kaohsiung’s Lingya District shocked society. Mr. and Mrs. Luo were killed with a knife in their home by their neighbor, Wu Long-man. Their two children were also at home at the time.

The Luo brothers lost both their father and their mother. At an age when they should have been cared for by their parents and grown up in safety, they were forced to face their parents’ murder and continue living with the wounds left by that day.

Their elderly grandparents became their support once more

After the boys lost both parents, their maternal grandparents took over their care. Already elderly, at a time of life when they should have been enjoying a peaceful retirement, they had to shoulder responsibility for raising two grandchildren.

They are not the children’s parents, yet they have had to become the most important source of support in the boys’ future lives. The children, in turn, have only their elderly grandparents to rely on. No one can say how long the road ahead will be, or how long that care can continue.

This family was given no choice.

The case was remanded for retrial

The defendant, Wu Long-man, was sentenced to death at both the first and second instances, but the Supreme Court vacated the judgment. One ground concerned whether he had a mental illness or disability and whether his mental state at the time of the offense reached the legal threshold relevant to imposing a death sentence.

The Supreme Court considered that the second-instance court’s assessment of the psychiatric evaluations and related evidence required further clarification, and remanded the case for retrial. For the Luo family, this meant another long wait.

September 21 retrial notice in the source article

The source article announced a hearing for Sunday, September 21, 10:00 a.m., in Courtroom 4 of the Taiwan High Court, Kaohsiung Branch. The year is not stated; this is not a verified current hearing date.

To the outside world, this may be one case and one trial. For the Luo brothers, what they lost that day was their father and mother. For their two elderly grandparents, it was not only the loss of their own child, but also the beginning of responsibility for their grandchildren’s lives and upbringing.

Justice may be delayed, but must not be absent

The case is not yet over in the source article’s account. But for this family, the happiness they knew could no longer be recovered after September 15, 2023.

May society continue to pay attention. May their father and mother rest in peace, and may the children left in this world finally receive justice and a future.
